HOW SHOPPING FOR A HOUSE IS LIKE DATING PART 2

In the first blog we talked about how you need to stalk the date.  Scan Facebook, Google, Linked In, see if you have mutual friends.  We discussed how this research can relate to shopping for houses. In this edition we will talk about Beauty.

Let's see, how does the house look in person compared to the photos? I hire a professional photographer for all of my listings. They can add lighting, crop stuff out that is less desirable. The photographer can angle the photo to make the room look awesome, despite obvious flaws. I also hire a stager, she comes in and makes the place look like a model home. The result, all the popular furnishings make you feel like moving into the house will make all your dreams come true!

I call that "lipstick". Have you heard the saying, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig? When you visit the open house, is it all lipstick?  Is the beauty only skin deep? Did the seller put some lipstick on to sell? Try to focus not just on the aesthetics but also the age of the systems in the house, the floor plan, will your stuff fit, does this house fit your needs?

When all the pretty items are gone what is left? Do you like the cabinets?  Did they paint the old cabinets? This is popular, did they do a good job? How old is the roof, the water heater? Have the appliances been updated? Are there copper pipes?

Does this property meet your criteria? Does it meet your everyday living lifestyle OR are you falling in love with the "beauty"? Don't get caught with a pig just because the lipstick is pretty...
