Happy Birthday, America! Here is a quick guide to 4th of July Events in and around Reston!

With summer in full swing, kids out of school, and anticipated upcoming summer vacations, it’s that time to plan your 4th of July festivities.  

If you are planning on watching the annual Reston fireworks at Lake Fairfax, it will be held  June 30th, 2018. The firework show is anticipated to begin around 9:15pm.    Before the fireworks, enjoy the entire day at the park, you can enjoy a puppet show, live music,  rent a boat (fee applied), or go to the Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole (fee applied) which is within a short distance away.  There are campgrounds (make reservations in advance), a skatepark, and a pump track at Lake Fairfax Park. There will be a nominal parking fee of $10 the day of this event.  Make it a day of fun! And do not forget your blankets!

Lake Fairfax Park is  located at 1400 Lake Fairfax Drive, Reston

The morning of the 4th of July, wake up and get some fitness in and show your patriotism and participate in the 9th annual 5k Firecracker Race at RTC, which supports our troops and families.  This race is given by Potomac Running Store and sponsored by Leidos.

Race is from 8am - 10am.

Other festivities of interest in and around town that you may want to consider that are happening on the 4th of July:


Great Falls:  5K, Parade and Hometown Celebration at Great Falls Village Centre,

8am – 1pm.   Fireworks at Turner Farm Park, gates open at 6pm and fireworks show is anticipated to begin right after dusk.

Schedule of Events:

8:00 am — 5K Walk/Run — Great Falls Freedom Memorial

8:00 am to 1:30 pm — INOVA Blood Drive — Great Falls Volunteer Fire Department

9:00 am — Little Patriot Parade — Village Centre Green (at the Gazebo)

10:00 am — Main Parade — Great Falls Village Centre

10:30 am to 12:30 pm — Festivities, Food & Fun — Village Centre Green

6:00 pm – Fireworks & Fun - at Turner Farm Park, gates open at 6pm

Town of Herndon:  for a family-fun event featuring games, patriotic arts & craft activities, live music, family games, bingo, food, balloon artists and more. Events take place in Bready Park softball field, 814 Ferndale Ave.

Schedule of Events:

6:30 p.m. - Games, bingo and children's arts & crafts begin - all for free! Festival foods will be available for sale.

7:15 p.m. - The band E3 will perform covers everyone knows and loves.

9:30 p.m. - Our fabulous fireworks show is choreographed to music and begins at dark, approximately.

Washington DC: Baseball (need to purchase tickets)l, Parade, Concert and Fireworks!  A day in our Nation’s Capital on Independence Day is unforgettable.

Schedule of Events:

11am- Washington Nationals play the Boston Red Sox at Nationals park at 11am.  

11:45am - The one-mile parade starts at 11:45 a.m. at the corner of Constitution Ave NW and 7th St NW, and ends at 2 p.m. at Constitution Ave NW and 17th St NW.

8:pm-9:30 - Capital Fourth Concert - held on the U.S. Capitol's west lawn, this years  concert line-up includes The Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffett and more. John Stamos is the host and the concert is broadcasted live on PBS.

No tickets are necessary and admittance begins at 3 p.m. The concert goes from 8-9:30 p.m. But get there early!

9:09pm - Fireworks are launched beginning at 9:09 p.m. from the reflecting pool area. The show lasts 17 minutes and 30 seconds and is visible from locations in D.C. and Virginia, according to the National Park Service.
