These two communities feature hundreds of brick buildings nestled in the trees. They were built quickly following WW2 to alleviate a housing shortage in the Washington area.
The communities split by I-395 are still popular with DC commuters. The communities of Fairlington (Arlington) and Parkfairfax (Alexandria CIty) were originally built as rental communities are very close to DC and remain popular.
Parkfairfax, is a condominium development of 1,684 all-brick garden-style units in more than 200 buildings on 132 acres in northwest Alexandria, was built in 1941 and 1942.
Fairlington, a larger condominium complex of 3,449 all-brick units on 322 acres in the southernmost corner of Arlington County, was built from 1942 to 1944.
Parkfairfax and Fairlington, are about 2 1/2 miles from the Pentagon. The complexes were converted from rental units to condos in the 1970s.
Both complexes are in a park-like settings with big mature trees, landscaped courtyards, winding roadways, bike paths and walking trails . Both have several community pools, tennis courts, volleyball courts, workout rooms and playgrounds. Residents use a pedestrian walkway to cross busy Interstate 395 to reach restaurants and movie theaters in Shirlington, an urban village of shops, restaurants and entertainment.
Condo prices in Parkfairfax are generally lower than Fairlington. One reason, no central air or heat in Parkfairfax community. The heat source tends to be baseboard units and window units for air conditioning. In Fairlington the units tend to be larger, have basements and backyards. Also the units in Parkfairfax have shared laundry rooms and Fairlington units typically have washer/dryer in the unit.
Fairlington and Parkfairfax were built with an attention to detail that would be hard to find today, with features such as all-brick exteriors with some stonework, ornamental chimneys, slate roofs, dormers, columned entrances and arched windows.
